We'll return to school on Monday, October 17, refreshed and ready for the next quarter. In Social Studies, the students have been working in small groups on a region of the United States, which will be all put together for a complete map. They include states, capital cities, major rivers, mountains, lakes, and forests. They're also creating a compass rose and key for their region as well as a scrapbook of information. The completed maps will be on display at summative, which is on Tuesday, December 6 from 5:00-6:30. We’re starting our expository report when we return from fall break. Students will choose a president to research for this writing project, which will either be a traditional report or a resume and cover letter for a presidential career change. The majority of this project will be done at school; however, the final paper will be typed at home. They’ll be using school computers for research, but they’ll also need at least one reference book. Since we do not have a library at school, and our classroom libraries are limited in resources, they should go to the library and check some out. We’re sending home a list of due dates that we would like you to read, sign and return to school. All of the documents for this project will also be posted on our weebly sites, including the list of due dates. We appreciate your support in this writing project.
0 CommentsMARK YOUR CALENDARS...9/23/2016 0 Comments We're almost there, our fall break is in sight, testing is over, teachers are finalizing grades, teachers are preparing for the next quarter, and autumn is in the air - well, sort of. ILP Schedule is open on Saturday. Be sure to schedule your ILP with your child's FOUNDATIONS teacher only. We'll be sharing Data Notebooks at that time as well as reviewing the ILP, discussing goals and other important information. You may take the Data Notebook into the Quad to review it with your child, but please leave it here at school. It's a work in progress and we'll be adding to it every quarter, it will be yours to have at the end of the school year. Since we're limited to 15 minutes, we need to make the best our time. If you have specific items to talk about, please have them ready before you come. You can send the teacher an email about it, especially if you have concerns or questions about a content area outside of your child's Foundation's teacher. We meet as a team ahead of time so we can be prepared to address your concerns or questions. We’ll have our first PRIDE on Tuesday, October 4, 1:15-2:45. We’re showing the movie, The Witches (based on a Roald Dahl book) in four classrooms. The other classroom is designated for students who have not earned PRIDE. Students may bring in a drink, we’ll be serving one small bag of popcorn, and a sign-up genius will be forthcoming with an opportunity for parents to sign up to provide a sweet treat. Every student is eligible for PRIDE by showing their PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY IN DAILY EFFORT:

0 CommentsCURRENT EVENTS.....8/25/2016 0 Comments CONGRATULATIONS to our student council representatives - Keenan and Brynne! We'll be looking forward to hearing your reports. We've been keeping up with current events by watching CNN Student News and now we've switched to Channel One News. It's comprised of three short segments - world news, interest stories and special weekly areas such as "Get Your Geek On", "The Next Big Thing", "Money Matters", etc. It is designed specifically to be shown at school and it provides a springboard for many class discussions and debates. It's age-appropriate for our students and they really look forward to watching it. Every week, 2 students from each cohort will be responsible for our own Current Events. They will receive an "In the News" sheet to be presented to the class the following week. There's a rubric on the back (20 points) for grading purposes. They can use the newspaper, an internet source (azcentral.com is a good one), radio, TV, etc., or they can take notes on a Channel One News story and report on that. Since it's only 2 students per week, they'll only be responsible for it a few times throughout the year. The grade is only posted after it's been presented, other than that they are exempt. They can only get credit for it when it's their turn. Thank you for those parents who were able to attend the Science Camp informational meeting on Wednesday. All Science Camp information will be posted on Mrs. BIggs' weebly, please check there for updates. 0 CommentsSCIENCE CAMP MEETING...8/20/2016 0 Comments Science Camp Informational Night: Aug. 24 at 6 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room. We will provide information regarding costs, chaperone information, packing lists, diet and medication questions, class activities and answer camp questions. You will not want to miss this important informational meeting. Please plan on sending one adult from your family. Students do not need to attend this meeting. Please contact Mrs. Biggs if you have questions, or if you are not able to attend this meeting and would like to be considered as a volunteer: Mrs. Biggs email and Weebly. Internet Safety Parent Night: Sept. 1 at ASU Preparatory Academy STEM campus from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. Presenters will teach about the potential threats that internet and social networking sites may bring to their children. They will educate parents about cyber predators and how they operate. Other topics covered include cyber bullying and sexting. 0 Comments <<Previous This week was another really great one. It seems like the students are used to the traveling and are doing great moving from class to class. Homework started this week and we are getting right into our fraction packets! The students have also done their first official 144 multiplication test. We are emphasizing that it isn’t a competition with anybody else, but we want to see them getting better each time they take the test. We are seeing three types of test results:
Thank you for all of your generosity with the community school supplies! It was great to meet and reconnect with those families who were able to come to our curriculum night. (curriculum powerpoint here.) Please check your student’s agenda to make sure they are getting their homework completed. It is always due the next class period that they have math. We really enjoy teaching your children, and look forward to watching their progress throughout the school year. Important Dates to Remember: Aug. 18 – School Pictures Sept. 5 – Labor Day No School Sept. 12 – 16th Scholastic Book Fair Oct 6 & 7 – Fall ILPs Oct 10-14 – Fall Break Our first week of school was wonderful! The students had the opportunity to connect with old friends and make some new ones. They were able to negotiate their new schedules and were very successful. We are fortunate at ASU Poly Prep to have such nice kids to work with and great families that support their children. We kicked off our Forty Book Challenge last week with an awesome cluster meeting! The students are really on fire to meet the challenge! Ask your student what they thought of Mrs. Hardt and Mrs. Biggs appearing in their tutus. It was hysterical! We will give you all the details about the challenge at the Curriculum Night. Speaking of curriculum night, it is this Thursday, August 11th from 5:30 to 6:30. We look forward to seeing you there! Mrs. Converse caught reading! Mrs. Mendoza caught reading! Student teachers caught reading!
